Wright State Theater will present MAMMA MIA!


Wright State University’s Department of Drama, Dance and Film will present world dance music sensation MAMMA MIA! October 29 to November 14 at the Wright State Creative Arts Center Playhouse Festival.

After more than 18 months of delay, MAMMA MIA! will finally take the stage in a disco-infused return to the Musical Theater for Wright State’s acclaimed theater program. Directed and choreographed by Greg Hellems, with musical direction by F. Wade Russo, stage design by department director Pam Lavarnway, lighting design by Matthew Benjamin and costumes by Michele Sampson, the show is a joyous celebration of young people. and not so young romance.

Artistic Director Joe Deer said: “In 2020, just 9 days before its scheduled opening, this production was halted due to COVID lockdowns nationwide. The set and costumes remained on stage and in our stores for 18 months, while most of the cast and crew graduated. Now, with an almost entirely new company, redesigned sets and costumes, and an incredible sense of excitement and anticipation, MAMMA MIA! will blow up the roof of the Festival Playhouse. “

Audiences from all over the world flocked to this light romantic comedy about a girl on the eve of her wedding seeking to find out who her real father is. Along the way, her mother, a former pop song sensation, reunites with her Disco trio and renews her friendship with the three men who could be Sophie’s father, and ultimately her own romance. Set on a fantastic Greek island and filled with the music of 1970s pop sensation ABBA, this show will literally have the aisles dancing and humming along with over two dozen Top 40 hits of their youth.

Sarah Green, who plays Sophie in MAMMA MIA! says, “It’s so invigorating to be back in the rehearsal room with my peers and keep telling this story. I’m so excited to finally be able to open this show. Now is the perfect time. This show of Well-being will pour joy and life into the hearts of its audience.
