Over 60 people participated in Julia Wetzel’s recent Line Dance Social.

The Sunnyvale Community Center ballroom was recently packed with over 60 people dancing to upbeat music – led by longtime Los Altos resident Julia Wetzel, organizer of the annual Line Dance Social.

Wetzel students and dancers came from across the Bay Area and beyond, some traveling to Sacramento to attend the event.

Most of the dancers seemed to know the choreography from the 50+ song playlist, although Wetzel led a walkthrough for some of the dances. The skill levels of the participants ranged from beginner to advanced.

The dancers followed Wetzel or the teaching assistants who were strategically placed against four walls to help people remember if they did not remember the steps. When the dancers turned to different walls, it was helpful to have an experienced participant to keep the group cohesive.

Wetzel prepared his students weeks before the social night and offered a free review class of all the dances on the playlist. She also enlisted her volunteer teaching assistants to run free revision classes the week before the social event.

Also a choreographer, Wetzel publishes her dances through a website (copperknob.co.uk) used by online dancers around the world, as well as through her own YouTube channel (Julia Wetzel Line Dance). Her dances have garnered millions of views on YouTube and she even travels abroad to host online dance workshops.

She taught line dancing for years at Marti’s Dance Studio in Los Altos before moving her classes to the larger venue in Sunnyvale.
