Eight-day Indian classical dance festival from today


An eight-day online Indian classical dance festival, held in tribute to the late Kapila Vatsyayan, a specialist in recently deceased Indian classical dance and art, is scheduled to begin on Tuesday.

Culture Minister AK Balan will inaugurate the program jointly organized by Culture Minister Bharat Bhavan and the National Youth Commission.

Bharat Bhavan Member Secretary and Festival Director Pramod Payyannur, Youth Commission Chairperson Chintha Jerome, Malayalam Mission Director Suja Susan George and Culture Director Sadasivan Nair TR will speak on this occasion.

The inaugural performance will feature Bharatanatyam Narthaki Nataraj’s exhibitor, Padma Shri’s first transgender recipient. It will be followed by performances by RLV Ramakrishnan (Mohiniyattam), Shijith Nambiar and Parvathy Menon (Bharatanatyam) and Aishwarya Warrier (Mohiniyattam).

Tribute session

The separate session will be held to commemorate Kapila Vatsyayan in which famous personalities including famous dancing couple VP Dhananjayan and Shanta Dhananjayan, Padma Subrahmanyam, dance historian and scholar Sunil Kothari, dance critic Tapati Chowdhurie, the playwright Omchery NN Pillai and the Communist Party of MA Baby, a member of the Indian (Marxist) Political Bureau, will be remembered as the “great matriarch of cultural research”.

The dance festival, which will be broadcast live on Bharat Bhavan’s Facebook page from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. daily, will feature 80 exhibitors of various forms of classical dance including Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Odissi, Kuchipudi, Mohiniyattam, Manipuri, Kathakali, Rabindra Nritham, Vilasini Natyam and Chhau Nritham.
