Several videos of real people dancing around the world have been falsely claimed to be Chinese robots.
Disney World is a chain of entertainment resorts, with 12 parks located in California, Florida, Tokyo, Paris, Hong Kong and China. In the entertainment section, different plays and live shows take place every day. A social media legend has been circulating online for at least 2020, attached to different dance videos, claiming Chinese humanoid robots performed the dances. One of these videos shows a couple of women performing Bharatanatyam, a traditional Indian dance. Other videos include ballroom and ice skating shows. The caption is the same for all the videos, which also claim that the show lasts five minutes and it takes four hours to buy a ticket, which costs 499 yuan. This claim is also circulating in various languages and countries. However, the widely shared videos are of real human performances, not robots.
Disneyland has an official app where all park tickets can be reserved and purchased. It also provides all information about daily schedules, events and other activities. According to the Shanghai Disney Resort, “A ticket to Shanghai Disneyland provides access to all attractions and entertainment in the seven themed lands inside the theme park (except for services, facilities and special events which require separate fees) . “
Using a reverse image search on the videos with the aforementioned specific caption, we found that none of them were related to Disneyland. A video shows two classical dancers performing Bharatanatyam, a South Indian dance form originally uploaded by an MIT-founded performing arts company named IndianRaga. The group offers online instructor-assisted performing arts training courses and operates in approximately 40 cities around the world. On August 11, 2017, they posted the video on their Facebook page and captioned it “Vahana Alarippu in ragamalika depicting Muruga, Vishnu, Shiva and Devi; with their vahanas.”
Another video that shows performers performing a ballroom dance on stage with an audience around them is a performance from the British dance reality show “Strictly Come Dancing” in 2013. Celebrities team up with choreographers to participate in the show. BBC One released the video on 7 December 2013 and captioned it “Abbey Clancy and Aljaz Skorjanec dance the Viennese Waltz in Delilah”.
Another video, which shows a man and woman dancing in what appears to be a studio with people recording it on their phones, is by Russian dancers Dima and Dilara. They posted the video on their YouTube channel on August 26, 2020 and captioned it “Dima and Dilara. Bachata. Moscow”. The logo shows that they performed it at the Moscow Bachata Stars Weekend event. Bachata is a dance style from the Dominican Republic.
Another video that shows ice skating performers is from 2012. The official YouTube page of Petrova Tikhonov, Maria Petrova and Alexei Tikhonov posted the video on February 14, 2012. The description of the video reads: “Naomi Lang and Alexei Tikhonov in the ice show of the first channel Ice Age. Professional Cup. Number 4. Hits of the 1970s-1980s. Without me, you, my beloved…” (translated from Russian).
The Disneyworld DisneyParks YouTube channel does not show any of the videos in question as part of their broadcasts.
Since there are no reports of robots looking exactly like humans with perfect dancing abilities, we mark this claim as false.
